Verisign gets to control the price of the .com and .net domain name prices. Legally they can raise the prices of these domain names by 7% per year. At least until 2012, when other companies will likely be granted the rights to get in on the action. About 90% of world wide web sites are registered with a .com or .net name. Verisign could be nice, and keep the domain prices about flat, or even a slight increase in fees - and stand a chance at retaining their all powerful positioning in 2013. Most likely they will go for the huge increases in domain name fees, to rake in as much cash as possible until they are booted out of their position. Might as well. They will need that cash when their primary income source has been depleted. Verisign probably hopes that this news will encourage people to register their domain names for the maximum of 10 years up front to avoid this increase in rates, which would give them huge gains in revenue.
Google's value dropping? Oh no. A stock that has gone from about a hundred bucks to almost five hundred in a year and a half is only trading at $364.80 today. It seems like people are so used to making a fortune overnight that anything less than spectacular - unheard of gains - are unacceptable. Google recently invested some of their $80 billion in cash to invest back into their business. I think that is a great move. I look forward to seeing what they have up their sleeve's for the future.
Well, Apple didn't release the WiPod, like I hoped. Instead they released the new Mac Mini. This news can hardly stand up to the big news in January (release of the Mactel machines, and iPod's with video capabilities) but Apple still commands people's attention. I'm confident that their next announcement will satisfy the stockholders (who are probably snatching up Apple stocks right now after the 3.5% decrease in value in the last couple days. Owning a piece of Apple the day before they announce the WiPod (or whatever they choose to call it) will be a good idea.
Miscrosoft claims that their search engine will be better than Google in six months. Fat chance. What MS doesn't realize is that Google users are true. We use Google because they are nice, they don't have flashy ads. MSN is too much. It looks like a tacky disco ball. Google gives me what I want, and they place their ads in an area where I can choose to look at them if I want, and won't get a headache if I decide to look at them.
